A New Day…A New Year…A New Goal

I must say that it is SO true… every year flies by faster as you get older and I never wanted to believe it. But 2011 came and went in the blink of an eye. 2011 was a life changing year for me: new city, new apartment, new friends, new job and a new after-work activity: my blog!
Part of me is still thinking “Rachel, why didn’t you just wait until 2012 to officially start your blog?” A new start to a new year would have been a really motivating way to get going. But it is something I’ve wanted to do for over a year and I am so lucky to be blessed with an amazing boyfriend who devotes his time to helping me with everything on it from web design and customization to photos (and much much more)!

And I’m really glad I started when I did because I am already having so much fun with it! December was a great month to share my holiday cheer and work out some kinks from my very first post, and I am excited to continue learning and generating new ideas for my blog in 2012. With all of that said… if there is anything you would like to see that I don’t talk about or see more of, let me know! I am trying to blend the aspects of my life together in what I hope to be useful information on fashion, career and life in general (and in an affordable way of course). I am always up for suggestions and constructive criticism!
So what is your New Year resolution? I will probably stick with the usual ones (uhh hello gym I have missed you! and dear closet, I can’t wait until I can WALK through you again). But also have another few goals in mind:
1. I want to stick with this blog, no matter what, because at the end of the day it makes me happy. But I’m not going to lie, I’ve already realized that at the end of an 8-hour work day, sometimes I just want to sit back and relax. I was so involved in college with internships, the newspaper, research, friends, family and events, and had so much energy… so it is still hard for me to understand WHY I feel so tired sometimes after sitting at work all day but I guess that’s how it goes when you get older :)
2. I am starting a new project and I want to go for it… push outside of my comfort zone to do something I never thought I would be doing. If nothing else, I hope to learn new skills from working on it!
3. Snooze my alarm clock only three times… I am a SNOOZER, a horrible, horrible snoozer… not so much a morning person! I want to feel less rushed in the morning and have time to make a pot of coffee! Especially these days, I have even more I want to do in the mornings before leaving for work (Catch up on new blog posts, check Facebook and Twitter…etc.)
And with all of this said… I really just wanted to wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!! No matter how you are celebrating, I hope you have a wonderful night. Let’s see what 2012 has in store :)

Class Act

I have been dying to get a faux fur collared-cardigan or faux fur vest for my winter wardrobe, but I’m glad I held off because I found something so much better! One weekend I discovered these fur scarves (of course because I love to touch things when I shop, this is also why I get kicked out of museums) shopping at the Albertville outlets just north of Minneapolis and was so excited because of how versatile they are. I bought one in gray/black and tan/brown to ensure it covered all the items in my closet! By lining the collar of my brown cardigan I was able to create a classic look that I can easily wear to work with a pencil skirt. It’s all about the details, and this fur piece along with a brooch and some fun jewelry can make a simple ensemble come to life.

One Sweater Four Ways

Although it might not be as cold as I’m used to for this time in the Midwest, I still have been running to my sweaters as an easy item to throw on, wear casually or dress up.  As you may remember, I posted on light-weight sweaters here, but here are four additional looks I put together for different ways to wear one.  The “At the Office” look was inspired by V at Stylishlyme who put together such a chic look with a cable knit and pleated skirt that I so badly wish I was wearing to the office each and every day! (and yes I posted a “vacation look” although I cannot wear shorts right now… this was me dreaming of going somewhere warm… oh how I wish…!)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!  I hope you have a wonderful day, with family, friends or just taking the day to relax.  I had a wonderful Christmas with my family in Iowa and am looking forward to spending tonight and my day off tomorrow with my boyfriend.

Sorry about the lack of posts, with the holidays I wanted to put that first, so hopefully I will be back to it this week! Safe travels as you make the trip home after all the celebrations!  Who else is looking forward to New Year’s Eve?!

Christmas Decor

View of our Christmas tree from the fireplace

So I know it may be a little late to be posting about Christmas decorations (should have been doing this on December 1st, right?!), but honestly I finally just got around to taking pictures of everything this weekend… thanks to my parents and my boyfriend’s parents requesting that we do so.  Anyway, here is how I decorated the apartment! I was so, so, SO excited about the fireplace… this is the first time I have ever had one to decorate with stockings!

Winter Trio

So thanks to my impulsive buying habits, I picked up these three new shades of nail polish last night while picking up some other NEEDED items… but when I brought them home, I was glad they ended up in my basket.  As I have been looking for some new colors for the winter months (rather than my typical go-to ruby red shimmer shade), I realized I am pretty set for upcoming events.

Eighteen Years Ago

Eighteen Years Ago

Eighteen years ago, the best Christmas gift I could ask for came a little early.  Today is my little sister’s birthday and to say that she is an adult now is just so crazy to me… where did the time go?!  I couldn’t be more blessed to have her in my life.  She has always told me that I am her role model, but as she has grown older, she’s the one I’ve been looking up to.  She is the sweetest, most selfless, kind-hearted person you could ever meet.  She also knows how to have a good time and let go of things she can’t control (something I wish I could do better in my own life).  So with all of that said…Happy Birthday to my beautiful little sister!

Tinsel Tuesday

Tinsel Tuesday

You might be wondering what Tinsel Tuesday is?  Well I wanted to go off of my last “What I’m Wearing” post on a casual Friday just to keep you updated on my wardrobe during the week since I don’t have a chance to take and post pictures every single day.  Anyway, I am calling it Tinsel Tuseday because my blouse with the stripes of metallic almost remind of tinsel and just because I am getting so excited for upcoming family, friend and work Christmas parties! Tomorrow we are having a marketing group Christmas potluck and Thursday is our company’s Christmas party (where I get to reveal my ugly Christmas sweater)!

“DO” the LOOK
Black Blouse: Basically any blouse would work, and unlike me, a colorful blouse would really be a great touch!  You could even wear a shirt dress, sweater dress or professional work dress with a cardigan to put  together this look.
Black Skirt:  Any basic pencil or professional work skirt is ideal.  A metallic skirt would be fantastic (I’m saving mine for our potluck tomorrow) and really bring out the metallic in the blouse or the belt.
Gold Buckle Belt:  This is the attention grabbing detail of the ensemble today.  Keep the rest of the outfit sleek, no matter the colors you choose, and detail with a big buckle (could be another color) to have a point of interest. If your skirt is high-waisted like mine, the belt is perfect to highlight the smallest part of you!
Black Patent Kitten Heels: *INVESTMENT PIECE* I don’t think I usually focus on shoes as an investment piece because there are so many, but you just can’t go wrong with a nice pair of black kitten heels.  They are great for skinny jeans (dressing up a more casual look), dress pants at work (help your pants hit at the right spot, especially if you are tall) or in an outfit like this!  They are just classy and you can never go wrong with classy.
Fishnet/Lace Tights:  *INVESTMENT PIECE*Maybe it is just me… but I feel like everybody has to have a great pair of fishnets!  They are fun and believe it or not can look very professional in an outfit like this. Of course, they make a statement, but pairing it with the right skirt length and more conservative top, you are in the clear to wear them to work to spice up your day.
Champagne Lipstick:  Just another shade of pink lipstick in my collection.  You can’t go wrong with a slight shimmery pink for work and it goes well with a lot of looks.  Bright shades, nude gloss or just some moisturizing cherry Chapstick or tinted Burt’s Bees are also great options!

Polka Dots + Accessories = LOVE

Polka Dots + Accessories = LOVE

I’m super excited to write my first post focusing exclusively on accessories because accessories are where I have the most fun! In fact, accessories are the glue that hold together my looks and really inspire me to try new things. Don’t get me wrong, I love the clothing itself, but I get really excited playing with the same clothing and accessorizing differently to completely make a new outfit.  And now time for this accessories post’s focus… polka dots! Polka dots were another huge trend seen on the runway this year and what could be a better way to wear them than accessories?! I personally love my polka dot open-toed shoes. They really are me… with a girly touch… a bow of course (anything with bows, ruffles or that’s shiny I’m instantly drawn to). They are the perfect touch for work outfit and appropriate for many other events. I literally just ordered this headband from Jada’s Jewels and I can’t wait to wear it! If you don’t own any polka dots, the easiest and most economical way to try out the trend is with an accessory, so go for it and make it you!
