The Business of Blogging

Business of Blogging

“Anyone can get dressed up and glamorous, but it is how people dress in their days off that are the most intriguing.”   —  Alexander Wang

There are a lot of fashion and personal style bloggers who can probably relate to this quote, as many document their personal style for everyday purposes and follow other bloggers who do the same. Kacie Ellis, owner of Daisy Rae Boutique and voice of Kacie’s Kloset,  tries to find styles for her online boutique that shoppers want to wear for everyday life.

Kacie started her personal style blog a year after she opened her store as a way to advertise and feature some of the items in her store.

“Initially, I hadn’t planned on starting a blog,” Ellis said. “To be honest, when I started my online store, I didn’t know much about blogging or the online shopping community. I quickly learned that blogs are the best way to advertise.”

The concept of Daisy Rae took a lot of brainstorming, but Kacie knew right away she wanted to share her love of fashion and finding trendy styles at reasonable prices — which is why nothing is over $50.

“Daisy Rae is a shopping experience that people can enjoy, a place where people can find clothes that are both fashionable and affordable,” Ellis said.

Ellis took advice from friends and family who have their own businesses before launching her boutique online. Her mom and sister helped her figure out what to sell, whether to have a store front or open a store online while her dad helped her with finances, something he’s been involved with for over 30 years.

As far as deciding on a name for her business, Ellis wanted something to reflect her personality and looked to friends and family for help.

“Picking out a name took a lot of brainstorming and feedback from family and friends. We decided on Daisy Rae because Gerbera daisies are my favorite flower and my middle name is Rae,” Ellis said.

Graduation Investments: Shopping 101

Since my older sister just graduated with her masters and some of my friends just graduated college, I decided it would be the perfect time to talk about some investment pieces straight out of college (or grad school). I was lost at first when I graduated because although I had a suit and collared shirts for interviewing, a lot of my wardrobe was still extremely casual. I have learned to incorporate a lot of those pieces into a more professional wardrobe, but there were still some pieces I needed to add to ensure that I was looking professional everyday. I was in a sales role at the time, so meeting with clients meant suits and looking as professional as possible. I had to learn to work my own style into some of these more professional looks, and it has taken some time but I finally feel good about my work wardrobe! Here are just some of my suggestions for shopping investments once you graduate!

The Suit

The suit: A suit is the most important investment you can make after graduation. #1 you should be wearing something extremely professional to your interviews and I have always worn my suit for the interview.  I just don’t think you can be too professional.  If you want to stand out more, use a bright colored blouse, bow blouse, necklaces and heels to make you stand out.  The suit screams “HIRE ME!” #2 If you are going into a job with professional wardrobe guidelines, a suit is going to save the day and make you look good as you are starting out in the real world.  Now you are probably asking, “Why do I need to invest in a suit if I am working in a more casual environment and don’t have to get dressed up everyday?” My answer: SEPARATES!  Whether or not you sit in a cube all day or meet with clients, having a blazer to dress up jeans or a pencil skirt/pair of slacks to wear on a daily basis with a more basic tee, the suit will serve you well.  If you are hesitating to invest, why don’t you ask Barney from How I Met Your Mother, perhaps he will change your mind about the suit!

Sparkle & Shine

I wore this outfit to my first Lia Sophia party, which was an absolute blast (and I bought WAY to much jewelry and drank too many margaritas!) My brooch is from Lia Sophia (seen here) and pinned on my grandmother’s vintage necklace, it went so perfectly with my pleated maxi! I recently decided why can’t I wear a little sparkle and shine to work as well?! I certainly would probably add a denim blazer or white blazer for some more sophistication, but since I don’t meet with clients and sit at my desk all day, day time sparkles with a classic pair of pumps seems appropriate to me!

Lilac Jungle

Isn’t it funny how somedays you have a lot to say about your outfit because the pieces tell a story and other days it is literally just: this is what I threw on and I liked the way it looked? Well I hope you don’t mind that I want to share a lot of information about my experience with my clothes (like yesterday’s coral dress post) and somedays it really is pretty simple.  One of my goals for the new year to help spice up what I wear to work is to mix prints and colors together.

Red, White & Blue Coming Through!

So maybe it is a little bit early for nautical inspired work wear, but who doesn’t love a good red, white and blue pairing? I bought this openwork sweater from Forever 21 just a couple weeks ago and when I was hanging it in my closet, I saw my light blue work blouse.  Instantly I knew how I was going to wear this new piece to work! I also know that the taupe color will be extremely versatile for me whether I wear it to work again layered over a blouse or for fun, casual looks! Happy Wednesday!

Fashion Dilemma

When it comes to work wear during the transition from winter to spring, I seem to have my own fashion transition with a shift from skirts to pants.  This usually happens because I get sick and tired of wearing tights. And I know a lot of fashionistas hate wearing tights, but I really do love wearing tights… so when I get to this point I am so ready for bare legs.  Although the weather has been significantly warmer lately, I’m still not sure that it is “bare legs season” yet in Minneapolis. Red & Purple Office

Ever since my personalized office inspiration post, I have been working on cleaning, organizing and redecorating my cubicle space (you can see my new Eiffel Tower lamp and red and purple candles above).  I wanted to do some bright, fun colors and add a lot of floral decor that I know I wouldn’t be able to get away with at home (I’m still surprised I didn’t talk my boyfriend into a leopard print or hot pink decorated apartment!) Anywho, one of my favorite color combinations that I know I will never be able to do at home (except for maybe in my closet) is red and purple.  So these were the colors I went for when ordering new pieces for my cubicle and giving my home away from home a little more life! These are just some snap shots from my phone… once I completely finish decorating, I am hoping to take some better photos!

Personalized Office Space

Most of my career posts have been pretty serious (of course jobs/careers are a serious subject), but I wanted to do something a little more fun that is still important to stay motivated throughout the day: creating a personalized office environment.   The important key to this is making it about you, and considering what is a good balance between fun/distraction and how to keep yourself motivated through your office space setup. Here are some of the ways I created my own personal work space:

Speaking Up

If a man isn’t willing to take some risk for his opinions, either his opinions are no good or he’s no good.” -Ezra Pound

Back in the spring, I was looking up quotations daily to send to my little sister as a part of being her sponsor for confirmation (my boyfriend was also a huge help for this!) It really was a refreshing way to start each day at work. I now have the luxury (yes in my mind it’s a luxury) to have access to daily quotes posted on our Intranet site.

What’s in a Job Title?

I started a new position with an engineering company back in August as their official marketing copywriter. Since starting the position, I’ve learned that they have not had an official copywriter or editor in their marketing department for over five years, and my job is not only to continue generating new content for promotional materials and for the website, but to learn the company’s style and create one voice.

This job truly encapsulates all of the things I love and want in a career… writing, editing, collaborating with others in marketing, sales and engineering, learning about how our products are made and work, as well as letting my inner nerd out. I’m now three months in and I’ve started to wonder where to draw the line between writing and other responsibilities. As much as I love writing, I also love coming up with new ideas, working with other departments and bringing in a fresh perspective based on my observations and being new to this industry. I have started taking on more leadership roles to run meetings and fill communication voids that are present between departments, as well as taking charge on projects I’m involved in to get them done more quickly and efficiently.

At the end of the day my main role will still writing content, but by initiating contacts with other departments, I am able to branch outside of the marketing department and really become knowledgeable. In the little career experience I’ve had, I have often heard people saying “it’s not my job to do that or get that done.” I think what’s more important is to be passionate about what you do and really engage yourself in the company, organization, small business, wherever it is you work, and try to learn something new every day.

Sometimes you have to be the person doing the dirty work and do what people ask of you. If you take this on with a positive attitude and keep pushing forward, I truly believe you will get far. If you sit back and only do the things listed under the job description you applied to, then that’s what you’ll always be. And in saying all of this, it is still a challenge for me because even though I am motivated and work hard at everything I do, taking on more of these leadership roles really pushes me outside of my comfort zone. I’ve quickly learned in my time as a professional (especially in my sales job) that pushing outside of your comfort zone brings the most rewards and gets you closer to who you want to become.
