And now for today’s Blog Every Day in May: What would I say I do if I couldn’t use my job?

I would say that I am an advocate of human rights, I am a writer (because I do this blog and journal in my free time), I dog mommy and I am a sister/friend/girlfriend who cares about all the people in my life, trying to help make everyone happy. This one is kind of hard because I think we always talk about our jobs first when someone asks us the question “What do you do?”

Heather of Pearls & Paws

I AM SO EXCITED about today’s Blog Every Day in May because it gave me the perfect opportunity to talk to you about my dear blogger friend Heather from Pearls & Paws. I’m sure many of you already know about her fantastic fashion blog and adorable pup named Rex (seriously the cutest dog in the world) but if you don’t, before reading… check her out NOW :)

I discovered her blog fairly shortly after starting mine in November of 2011 and really loved her outfits and quirky, entertaining writing style. She always has a positive attitude in her posts and her personality just always seemed to shine through in her writing and outfits. I love her style because it is cute, feminine, affordable and practical!  She always has an element of surprise to each and every outfit, whether she is dressed up for work or dressed casually for the weekends. Oh and she always looks drop dead gorgeous!

So this is how it all started: she once commented on this post when I was at a Twins Game and she said she was there too. I was like SWEET but didn’t think much of it because I know a ton of people who drive up from Iowa and other places to go to a Twins game, so I thought maybe she came from somewhere else.

Heather comment

Luckily Heather took outfit photos in an area I recognized and I immediately realized she must live really close to me! She was just outside of one of my, well OUR, favorite restaurants in Eden Prairie, MN, Kona Grill! (I currently live in Eden Prairie and she is just one suburb over!) I love sushi and they have great happy hours. Turns out, Heather loves sushi and great happy hour specials too!

My comment

So we decided to have a blogger date at Kona and well, let’s just say we hit it off on our first date :) We have formed a great friendship, relating not only on fashion blogging, but work, boyfriends, dogs and life in general. I have had fun watching Sex & the City with her, eating sushi and drinking wine, playing with our pups Rex and Emma and chatting about anything and everything. Oh and did I mention she’s a Packer fan? (Sorry other Minnesotans but when you’re from Iowa you kind of have to choose a team and my family has always been a huge fan of the Packers!) Well and she’s from Wisconsin, so obviously ;)

She is one of the sweetest people you will ever meet, but is also a go-getter traveling all the time for her position and teaching a marketing class. What an inspiration! And all while looking amazing each and every day. She is also very modest in her accomplishments, I mean you will find this girl PINNED all over Pinterest but I have never even heard her mention it. And balancing life with her fur baby and boyfriend while posting 4+ times a week? Yeah she is kind of a big deal and I am friends with her… I’m pretty darn lucky! :)

P.S. Happy Cinco de Mayo!

My favorite quote for Blog Every Day in May. This is so true. Positive attitudes really do create extraordinary results. Anytime life brings me down and I want to complain about what’s going on, I have to remember this and how fortunate I am. The best moments of my life have been times where I have kept a positive attitude, even when I felt hopeless.

SEO Tips for Bloggers

SEO Blogging Tips

Thanks to Fran and Brynn, I found out about the Blog Every Day in May Challenge and wanted to join in today! I will skip day one for now (maybe I will tell my life story in under 250 words eventually, but honestly have no idea what to say). Today’s topic is something you know a lot about or are good at. Well today I wanted to share with you some SEO basics that might help you with your blog since I am the SEO Specialist at my company.

And I wouldn’t say this is something I’m good at per say… SEO is something you continuously build upon and I just started as the SEO Specialist along with my Copywriter duties at my company a year ago, so I have been building up from our existing online content and structure.  This past November I went to the big SES  Conference in Chicago, but aside from that and what I do for my blog, I try to keep up with it and how Google’s algorithm is changing as much as anyone else  does and can. I don’t want to go into the topic too much because I literally have read hundreds of pages from white papers/eBooks and have pages upon pages of notes on SEO, but I want to give you a few tips that I think each and every one of us can easily do on a daily basis for blogging purposes! Here we go:

First and foremost, SEO is not something you do and then set aside and never touch again. It is much like everything else you do with your blog, just as you are constantly updating your social media feeds and blog posts, you should always be thinking about SEO and how people in or outside of the blogging community might be searching for you.

You should always create unique page titles. Page titles are what appear in the search results, so you want it to tell people what it is they are going to be clicking into and you want to feed the bots your titles on pages. Ideally, each page of your blog should have a unique title. Although sometimes you want a creative title for a blog post, it is better to have a title with information. Titles should be 4-5 words max.

  • For example, one post I did was on different animal prints and what colors they go best with. The title for this page is “Animal Print & Color Combinations”– this clearly explains the page, which is good for bots crawling my page and people who are interested in this topic. I could have done a fun, creative title like “Wild Pairings,” but it would not provide the same benefit to driving traffic.

Content is KING (or QUEEN if you prefer). It always has been and it always will be. Search engines want to direct people to websites that answer their questions or give them what they are looking for. This is why endless keywords AKA keyword stuffing is not the way to go anymore. People used to KEYWORD the crap outta their pages to show up at the top of search engines, but have poor content and bad websites. Not good. Do you like clicking through to uninformative or poorly designed sites? Nope. Neither do I. Keywords are still relevant, but must flow naturally with your content. Bots usually crawl the top of your page, so it is important to have your most relevant information at the top of the page.

  • I see a lot of room for improvement for this out in the blogging world if people are wanting to drive traffic organically. I LOVE reading about bloggers’ personal stories, I love reading about their weekends, etc. etc. and I write about it too, all the time. But I really think if you are wanting to drive more people to your blog, you should also be incorporating information about the outfit. I know it can be boring to talk about the step by step process of how you put an outfit together, but here is where you can get creative with your writing. YAY for creativity! I wish I could give you a good example, but this just has to come from what you know about your clothes, trends, shopping and what you are wanting to accomplish with each post. Make sense? E-mail me if you have specific questions about this.
  • Another GREAT tool if you are writing a review or a post that you think a lot of people would be interested in is Google’s Keyword Tool. Simply type in words or keywords you are currently incorporating in your post and BAM, you have a whole page of similar words and suggestions as well how many global monthly searches there are for that word.

And honestly, that’s it! Add some tags to your posts, but it that isn’t as important as it used to be. In fact, at the conference I went to, we were told to leave metatag fields blank. Useful, relevant content is key and you will be set to go!

Here are a couple of GREAT resources if you haven’t ever read into the topic and want to learn even more:

Google’s Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide

HubSpot has everything you could possibly want to learn and a couple of great ones to download are “17 SEO Myths You Should Leave Behind in 2013″ and “Learning SEO from the Experts: A Step-by-Step Guide.”  These are free, you just need to fill out a short form (name, e-mail, marketing challenges). All are saved on my desktop as a PDF so if you want, just e-mail me and I can get those to you without having to enter your information!

Hope you enjoyed the post. Let me know if you would like to see more posts like this in the future. I have a couple other ideas that I could talk about related to SEO, marketing and branding your blog.

HauteLook

HauteLook

So earlier this week, Ashley tweeted about HauteLook, and I completely agreed! They have way too many cute and practical things that could literally spend all of my paychecks in one place. But I can’t help it! I wish it would stop, but between organization tools, home decor and shoes, HauteLook is somewhere I am constantly finding something new (that I pretend I “need”).  Anyway, I am obsessed with basically everything on there. Do you shop at HauteLook?

1. How adorable is this zig zag pillow? I am picturing a couple of these sitting on our porch chairs for the spring and summer — $36.00

2. Our kitchen incorporates blues, yellows and greens. I picture this oval clock fitting in perfectly — $55.00

3. I am OBSESSED with sheep. Obsessed. Seems a little weird maybe but I know people are obsessed with owls and foxes, so it is okay. My mom already bought me a sheep from T.J.Maxx and adding a few more sheep to our apartment would make me very happy — $19.00

4. When wouldn’t I wear this crochet woven dress this summer? Essential? I think yes — $29.00

5. I SERIOUSLY need this! A jewelry organizer that goes over your door?! Perfection. Right now I have a small jewelry holder but it takes up so much room and a hanger for my necklaces on my door (but it makes so much noise when I close the bathroom door). Anyway, this would be the greatest replacement and help get me organized! — $99.00

6. A cute metallic strappy sandal? For $15.00 I could wear these all summer and not feel bad if I ruin them! — $15.o0

7. A tote in chartreuse? Yes please! — $23.00

This post is NOT sponsored in any way, shape or form. I am just really loving HauteLook, their selection and prices.

Dear Mr. Handsome,

Happy 2 years together!

Like you said once, a bad day with you is still better than a day without you, and I couldn’t have said it better. I’ve never been happier and even though I’m unsure about where life is headed sometimes, I know that I have you by my side. We have many more adventures ahead and I can’t wait to share many more memories with you!

Vegas Baby!

Vegas

Have you seen the Paris version of this? I completely agree with it, but it also got me thinking that Vegas is always a good idea too… right?! ;) After a couple months of eagerly awaiting, my boyfriend and I are off to Vegas today! (Bye bye snow!)

Saturday we will be celebrating our two year anniversary and it honestly feels like so much longer. I love him with all that I am and couldn’t ask for better. He truly is my best friend and pushes me to be a better person every day.

Have a wonderful weekend and I’m sure I’ll be back with tons of photos to share next week! Follow along on Instgram if you’d like!

Life this week

Let’s talk about life lately… it has been a couple weeks since I’ve done a weekend post.

Earlier this week I went and got a manicure… I loved my blue nails, but after doing our dishes, my nails started to chip. I got lazy and went to the mall and picked out this gorgeous orange color. Went well with the bracelet I was wearing that day! (my grandma gave me this bracelet, along with a lot of other jewelry. She said she just doesn’t wear it anymore and would rather have someone get use out of it… gosh I love her!)

Last week I wore stripes with plaid… something I’ve been seeing on a lot of bloggers, such as Shanna, AJ and Dora, lately and just LOVE! This easy-to-wear outfit was perfect for casual Friday!

Smart Shopping with Save1

Save 1

I am really excited to introduce a wonderful service and site to you today called Save1! Now, anytime I go shopping online, I always, and I mean ALWAYS check for coupons because even if you just save a few dollars, it is at least helping with the shipping costs (and sometimes the coupon is for free shipping).  That’s one of the best parts about online shopping … the ability to simply and easily enter a promo code for savings (rather than clipping coupons and losing them in your purse).

Save1 works with over 5,000 of the top online merchants, including the Gap, Target, Overstock, and many more. Save1 brings you great coupons and deals to the places you shop at regularly. Why wouldn’t you want to use the site just for the savings?

BUT WAIT… there’s more. Every time you make a purchase through one of Save1’s partner sites, you provide a meal to a malnourished child. Shopping and being socially responsible? There’s not much math to do here, and it really is that simple.  On Save1’s site there is a meal counter in the upper right hand corner, updated every time someone makes a purchase to show how many meals have been provided so far.

Save1 invites all of us to make a difference, and now I’m inviting you to make a difference. Of course there are plenty of other ways to get involved to help stop hunger, but by using Save1 as your main site to find coupons and save money, you are doing something simple in your everyday life that is also SAVING lives. It’s a win-win situation! Please take the time to look at their site, read their story and learn more about how you can help.  SAVE1

Sometimes it is just the little things we do within our everyday routines that can make the biggest differences. Let’s work towards this cause together and provide meals for hungry children.

Life This Week

Life has been interesting as of lately. This week we went couch shopping as our poor old couch is on its last leg (literally). Gotta love when unexpected expenses come up! Also, I’ve rearranged  changed my priorities in the past week with the top ones being working out/eating healthy and getting organized. There has been a lack of outfit posts lately too, which has been a combination of me coming home and changing into work out clothes ASAP and not wanting to stand outside in the cold. Indoor pictures don’t ever turn out well in our apartment because we have a lack of lighting (no central lighting, just the lamps that we have bought and placed in rooms). So anyway, I started Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred on Tuesday and have been sore and tired ever since. Seriously though, I hope it will pay off and get me back on track to working out on a consistent basis and being healthy along with a good diet (hopefully I stick to the full 30 day shred).  I can’t focus my energy in all the places I want to right now, so I have to prioritize and this is how it has turned out for me.
