Puppy Love

- Uncategorized

If you follow me on Instagram… you may already know that I have 1. been looking for a puppy and 2. officially will be a mom to a sweet little (and yes I mean little) mini aussie shepherd in just over a week! Β My boyfriend and I have been discussing this (well mostly him) because I have been nagging about getting a kitty but he was all about getting a puppy/dog.

Well it has been quite a few years since I’ve had an animal companion in my life so once I convinced him it was a good time to get a puppy (not completely true… πŸ™‚ ) I started looking at local adoption shelters and breeders until I found this little girl we will be naming Emma! I met her last night and barely slept because I was so excited thinking about bringing her home! This morning it was confirmed that she would be ours after July 25.

My main reason for posting about this is to get some tips/advice or links or DIY suggestions (dog toys?) for having a new puppy! We are new dog owners (my family dog growing up was 2 when we adopted him, so no puppy experience) so any advice on puppies would be most appreciated! Also, of course I want to deck her out in cute pink rhinestone or studded collars and leashes, but the bf is not all about that. Β Any good websites for unique/cute dog supplies? Again, I’m super excited and wanted to share this news with my readers and let you know that she may be appearing in some future posts!

Hope you are having a great Monday πŸ™‚

P.S. I may have or may have not already purchased this:

Congrats on the new puppy. I wish I could give you some advise but I’ve never had a dog. My bf and I are also discussing this same thing. Maybe I’ll get one soon and come to you for advice πŸ˜‰

she is so cute! When I saw the pics I thought “that looks an awful lot like my dog” Even showed it to the Hubs and then I read it was a mini aussie so there you go! Ours will be 8 months tomorrow and she is the sweetest dog. They are wicked smart and super sweet! As far as tips go, I’d say take her home on a friday/saturday cause the first night sleeping in a kennel by herself is not the easiest so you probably won’t sleep that great.
She’ll also probably start teething soon after you take her home with you so get her lots of chew toys (if she gets stressed about teething because of the pain she might develop a little diarrhea but it won’t last long) You can give her ice cubes too, mine loves chewing on those and they soothe their gums.
Make sure you watch her carefully when you first take her home so she knows what’s ok to do and what isn’t. And take her out every few hours just so she gets used to potty outside (puppies can only hold it for a few hours, its usually how many months they are + one, so if she’s 2 months then she can’t hold it for more than 3 hours)

Man, this turned out long. Anyway, you’ll love her, they are great family dogs! If you have any puppy questions you can email me, I’d love to share mini aussie stories πŸ™‚

    SO.MANY.THINGS.TO.SAY.

I have 2 pups. I think first and foremost its important to establish a routine. Like…first thing in the morning they are let out of the crate, then outside, then breakfast. They need to have “their place” – crating is so important for potty training. Its sometimes hard to be like “go sleep in your bed, not with us!” but its really best for both of you. Look for puppy day cares/play times. I take mine to puppy day care at least once every 2 weeks – they go while I’m at work and just get to play with other dogs for 8+ hours and it costs like $18 a day (in Madison anyway). My doggy day care place also has Puppy play time on saturday mornings where you can get come for like 45 minutes and have your dogs play together. really having your dog be comfortable around other dogs and people is key for having a happy, friendly and outgoing dog. ugh, so much more to say but we can chat more when you come to Madison πŸ˜€

Congrats!! She is so cute!! I wish I had some advice, but I’ve never had a dog. When Emma grows up a bit, you should do a post on like “what you learned about having a puppy”. That’d be super helpful for all of us wanna-be doggie mommies πŸ™‚

ours isn’t a mini, but still an aussie. he is super smart, and was potty trained in less than a week. he learned to whine a little and we’d let him out. he still does it 13 years later. he did go through a horrible stage where he chewed everything when he was teething…and i mean everything. chair legs, woodwork, couch cushions, candles…so maybe keep your puppy kenneled (we didn’t). they have lots of energy, so lot of walks and runs and dog park excursions! and i would recommend taking a obedience class because while they are super smart, they also are stubborn. best of luck! she is adorable!
