It Finally Feels like Spring

spring1

Yesterday was probably the first day it finally felt like spring to me. It got up to 50, the sun was out just long enough to put a smile on my face and I was more productive than I’ve been in months on a Sunday. I worked out, got groceries, made lunch and then threw dinner on in the crock pot, did a load of laundry and showered (YAY!) When I was getting ready I was in such a good mood, I just felt like wearing something that really reflected how I was feeling. No, I didn’t really have a reason to be dressed up per say, but a little bit of lilac, a white skater skirt and my metallic pumps definitely matched my mood at the time. And I got the boyfriend’s approval, which is always a bonus!  I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Did you do anything fun?

Class Classics

It’s official… my little sister starts college today! I am so excited for her (and very jealous haha) and hope she has a wonderful first day at Iowa State.  This weekend I went back to some of the classic pieces I would wear to class end of August and throughout fall.  These included flouncy skirts, casual tops and a scarf, statement necklace or hair pieces, and of course a pair of sunglasses!  Simple, smart pieces always made it easy for me to get ready in the morning.  Anyway, clearly not wearing these pieces to class anymore, but that doesn’t mean I can’t wear them on the weekends! Yesterday I paired my mustard yellow casual top with my red flouncy skirt, a leo print scarf and wedges for an easy-going Sunday. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

Shopping for Skirts at Kohl’s & Discount!

Remember my outfit post called Lilac Jungle? It was an outfit I wore to work back in April incorporating my style goals: pattern, color, accessories! Well I bought this safari-esque, neutral skirt from Kohl’s quite a few years ago, but it has been a staple in my closet ever since.  It is a fun pattern in a neutral shade, so I literally can’t go wrong.  Living only five minutes away from the Kohl’s store in my hometown of Cedar Falls, Iowa… Kohl’s was always  a go-to shopping place for me and I have always found the best deal on wardrobe staples.  Now I once again live across the street from Kohl’s where I’m at in Minnesota! Kohl’s skirt selection, found here, offers a variety of textures, patterns and colors to work with any existing wardrobe!

Colorful

There’s nothing I love more than a “mismatch”…probably not the best way to say it.  Maybe this is better: feminine + edgy, casual + dressy, neutrals + color… I guess opposites is more of what I’m trying to say!  I love this casual outfit… just a striped colorful tee I picked up from TJMaxx a few weeks ago, a mini skirt that has been present in my closet for far too many years, my new “fake” JCrew necklace from eBay ;) and just for kicks and giggles, a pair of JustFab heels!  When I first wore this outfit, I was rocking (in my mind at least) my kicks from Monday’s outfit post and then I remembered I owned this pair of fabulous burnt orange heels.  What a perfect way to glam up a more casual outfit and of course add even MORE color. Hooray for color!

Graduation Investments: Shopping 101

Since my older sister just graduated with her masters and some of my friends just graduated college, I decided it would be the perfect time to talk about some investment pieces straight out of college (or grad school). I was lost at first when I graduated because although I had a suit and collared shirts for interviewing, a lot of my wardrobe was still extremely casual. I have learned to incorporate a lot of those pieces into a more professional wardrobe, but there were still some pieces I needed to add to ensure that I was looking professional everyday. I was in a sales role at the time, so meeting with clients meant suits and looking as professional as possible. I had to learn to work my own style into some of these more professional looks, and it has taken some time but I finally feel good about my work wardrobe! Here are just some of my suggestions for shopping investments once you graduate!

The Suit

The suit: A suit is the most important investment you can make after graduation. #1 you should be wearing something extremely professional to your interviews and I have always worn my suit for the interview.  I just don’t think you can be too professional.  If you want to stand out more, use a bright colored blouse, bow blouse, necklaces and heels to make you stand out.  The suit screams “HIRE ME!” #2 If you are going into a job with professional wardrobe guidelines, a suit is going to save the day and make you look good as you are starting out in the real world.  Now you are probably asking, “Why do I need to invest in a suit if I am working in a more casual environment and don’t have to get dressed up everyday?” My answer: SEPARATES!  Whether or not you sit in a cube all day or meet with clients, having a blazer to dress up jeans or a pencil skirt/pair of slacks to wear on a daily basis with a more basic tee, the suit will serve you well.  If you are hesitating to invest, why don’t you ask Barney from How I Met Your Mother, perhaps he will change your mind about the suit!

Lilac Jungle

Isn’t it funny how somedays you have a lot to say about your outfit because the pieces tell a story and other days it is literally just: this is what I threw on and I liked the way it looked? Well I hope you don’t mind that I want to share a lot of information about my experience with my clothes (like yesterday’s coral dress post) and somedays it really is pretty simple.  One of my goals for the new year to help spice up what I wear to work is to mix prints and colors together.

Layered for the Office

As much as I love my work uniform (seen here) for the spring and summer… there are still days that the air conditioning is on full blast and I freeze at work.  This is when layering is key.  I can stand the chill on my legs (even though I get goosebumps and then so much for shaving everyday), but when my arms get cold, it is almost unbearable.  That’s why this is another key work outfit for me: Light-weight sweater layered over chambray (or a collared button up).

May Flowers

May Flowers

Since I did a post about umbrellas and wellies for April Showers at the beginning of April, I couldn’t resist to do a May Flowers post today for the first of May!  I know floral print has been out there for awhile, but I wanted to compile some extremely cute items that you can make yours for under $50!

Seeing Double: Sister Style

My little sister and I literally wore the same openwork sweater within one day of each other!!!!… (you can see my full outfit post with this sweater here)  I love how she paired it with with a navy skirt and wore her hair up! We have always loved the same things, so when we saw this sweater at Forever 21, we both had to get one! I wanted to share this because my little sister has always been such a fun person to share my love of fashion with… we love sharing outfit ideas, giving each other advice and flipping through magazines or scrolling through blogs together! Do you share a similar style with anyone in your family?
